12 June: Button Battery Awareness Day
This week is Child Safety Week, an entire week dedicated to raising awareness about child safety, promoting children's well-being, and highlighting measures to protect children from harm. Next week, on the 12th of June, we will have Button Battery Awareness Day. Button Battery Awareness Day was established in 2021 by Trista Hamsmith in memory of her 18-month-old daughter, Reese, who tragically passed away after ingesting a button battery.
Button battery safety has always been a top policy for EPBA. During Button Battery Awareness Day and Child Safety Week, we make additional efforts to raise awareness about button battery ingestion through a social media campaign in collaboration with the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). This campaign will provide families, educators, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers with crucial information and guidelines on preventing button battery ingestion and what to do if it occurs. Over the next week, we distribute these resources through our social media channels.
